POST by ELIEZER: Parties, Machetes, Alcohol, a Fight and Dead People

Eliezer at a pond in Richmond, Virginia

Hello, my name is Eliezer. This time I am going to tell you about what happened in a street fight that left many hurt and two people dead, at a time we celebrate each year across Nicaragua.

On both the first and the 10th of August each year, there is a parade called the “IPICO.” Horses and carriages represent each Nicaraguan city, and in every town there are different activities for the local people to participate in.

My village chose a girl to be the queen of the party. They called her the Beautiful Indian. At the party in our barrio there were games and activities for the people to partake in. Men on horses walked through the crowds and everyone gathered around and played a game called the “Oily Pig.”

This game is a lot of fun. You see, there is a pig that they smother in oil, and then they let the pig go and you have to try and catch the small animal. It’s really hard. Whoever grabs the pig without letting go is pronounced the winner.

In this game the participants are formed into eight groups. There are three men per group. One person in the group has to go and catch the pig, and this is how my story starts.

At this celebration my cousin, , decided to play with a group of friends. When the game started everyone went to grab the pig and it was a tough fight. When someone had grabbed the pig, someone else came along and pushed the other fella off of the pig, freeing the grunting animal and creating an escape route for the wee mammal.

In one of these fights my cousin, Marcial, grabbed the pig but a man punched him from behind and my cousin fell unconscious.

When he woke up, the game was already over, but my cousin was really angry because of what had happened to him. My cousin went to go and drink alcohol at 6pm in the evening.

My cousin, Marcial, went to the man that had punched him in the game, to talk to him about the punch. The man who’d punched him grabbed a bottle and struck him over the head and he fell to the ground with blood gushing from the wound. A fight erupted and all of my cousin’s friends started to fight against those who were beating them.

Marcial stood up and grabbed a stick and started to hit the man who was attacking him and it turned into a massive brawl, with all of my cousin's friends fighting against the friends of the man who had slugged my cousin.

One of my cousin’s friends got hit by a machete and cut his hand. And his other friend was stabbed with a knife in the stomach and all of his guts came flying out. My family was afraid that the assailants had killed my cousin.

At that time my cousin was fighting with the man, but the man had a machete and my cousin only a stick, so my cousin grabbed a rock and hit him on the head, but other men arrived and started to beat my cousin. They left him in a wounded state, almost dead.

When the fight was finally over everyone realised that two people had died. One of the people murdered was a friend of my cousin and the other was a friend of the man who’d punched my cousin. Everyone else who’d participated in the battle was badly wounded. It was a very horrible fight. A celebration that sadly ended in tragedy.

I learnt through this horrendous event, that we can have black hearts, but we need to forgive and be patient because the loss of life from that celebration was needless and sad.

Thanks for reading my story.

POST by STIVEY: Thankfully the One Who Got A Way

Once, my brother was playing football. Well football is his favourite sport and he was playing in a park and a guy was there. After my brother had finished playing, the fellow who was also at the park wanted to steal my brother’s money.

My brother left the park at great speed, running towards our house. When he looked back there wasn’t just one chap chasing him, there were now two. My brother ran to where my cousins were. My cousins grabbed rocks from the ground and started pelting them at the would-be-robbers, who thanks to my cousins, ran away.

My brother didn’t know it, but the thieves lived in the same neighborhood as us. I think the robbers were waiting for their time of revenge. They didn’t act, they just waited.

One day, the robbers were watching my brother. They wanted to stab him with a knife. The thieves almost succeeded. My brother was fighting with one of them and the other pulled out a knife and threw it at my brother’s neck. However, my brother saw the knife coming and ducked away from it, only being slightly nicked on his neck.

Thanks to God, someone called for my cousins, who arrived on the scene quick-smart. My cousins started throwing stones at the two bad dudes and they started to run, but my cousin hit one of them. He lay on the ground in pain and the other ran away and left his companion lying there in the dirt.

My cousins wasted no time in doling out their punishment. They beat him. They nearly killed him! Then my brother said to my cousins “stop it, or he'll die!”

The police arrived shortly after and took the robber away as their prisoner and put him in prison. And so they never tried to steal from my brother again and thank God he was not killed.

POST by STIVEY: Bad Boys in the Barrio

Stivey's brother, with his wife

Hello my name is Steven. Today I’d like to talk a little about my life.

One day my brother was in my mother's house, but in the house next door lived a gangster, named Gary. Gary did not like my brother, whenever he saw my brother he always said bad words. My brother did not mind the being spoken to in this way.

One day the gang found him in the street. The gang member who didn’t like my brother started to treat my brother badly, but my brother told the gang “hey I didn’t treat you badly.” The gangster responded by saying “I do not like you, so I'm going to kill you.” My brother became scared when the gangster said that.

My brother was so scared, he went and told my mother what had happened. My mum was scared, but she told my brother not to worry. She told my brother that her and his father would talk to the parents of the gangster.

Then my mum went to talk to the gangster’s mother. One day my brother was come home from work and the gangster was on the corner, waiting for him with another guy. My brother found a friend of his and the friend said “hey, do not go that way because they might do something bad to you.

So my brother went a different way and the gangster realised that my brother had returned home via a different route. The gangster decided to track my brother down and started screaming at him. The gangster started throwing rocks at the door of the house, so my brother became very angry, because my brother realized that one of the rocks had actually hit him.

My brother went to his room and found a pipe. Then my brother went outside, via a different door. He was mad! He grabbed the pipe and hit the gangster’s friend on in his head. Then the gangster became scared and called out “you killed him!” My brother replied “listen animal, now I’m going to get you!”

When my brother went to hit the gangster, his parents called the police. When the police came they looked for my brother. So my brother went quickly to the kitchen and found a knife, but only to cut himself on his arm, so that their was evidence against the gangster.

My brother showed the police his arm police and made a complaint against the gangster. Thanks to God, my brother and my mum did not get hurt. Now my family are good and God never leaves us. He is always with us.

POST by RENZ: My Right to Blare Alarms

Aben & Lorenzy

Sunday´s are most of the time very relaxing days for us but last Sunday was insane and sort of scary. It started out really fun. My sister and I went to the German school because they were having a fair and some friends of ours invited us to go with them. Once we got back we swam and had fun and decided that at night time we would have a movie night.

A friend of mine (our neighbor) came to our house whilst I was making dinner. She asked me to go to Covanic; a place that is a university; a home to some people; it has offices, a library, and things like that.

She needed to do some homework and print some things so a few of the Trickster boys, my sister, my friend, her brother, and I went walking because it was just down the street.

When we got back two of the Trickster boys had gotten into trouble for smoking in the casita where they were staying. They had to move into the shed bedroom for a week because of that, but Rene got mad because he said he didn´t smoke in the casita but had let others smoke in there.

One of the other Trickster boys also got mad because Rene had disrespected my mum and so Aben and Rene got into a fist fight. I went outside to see but they had already finished fighting.

Rene went into the casita and then went inside the main house. I followed him because I wanted to talk to him. He walked into the kitchen and got a drink of water, then he grabbed a big knife and went running to the gate to go outside. My mum grabbed his shirt and tried to stop him.

I stood next to him and grabbed his arm which had the knife and with my other hand held the gate shut. He was swinging his arms around and he almost stabbed me so I screamed and let go of him and so he went running to where the others were.

I went running the other way to where Fran and my friend were and told them what had happened and that he had a knife but it was too late, Rene and Aben had already started fighting again.

Luckily, Aben had kicked him and so he did not get stabbed. Jamil, who worked for us but now works in the army made them stop fighting. Then my mum came out and told Rene to go inside.

She first talked with Aben and left him. When she went inside she told Rene to go into her room with her. When she came out she locked the door and we started the movie but she went outside.

In the middle of the movie Rene got out by the window but none of us saw him get out. Then Beycker came inside and told my mum that Rene was outside. And so she put him back in her room and he was in there for the rest of the night.
