POST by JESSICA: Bus(t)

Jessica in a moto-taxi with Jed and Myron
This past weekend I went along with the Brien kids to support Fran in her Bboy competition.  Whilst there I was also able to visit some of the guy’s (Nicavangelists) homes and meet their families (as if I don’t spend enough time with them during the week).

On Sunday afternoon, while the Brien children were spending some quality time with their mom, I was invited to go to the mall with some of the guys just to walk around and window shop because they had nothing better to do. So after spending about two hours at the mall we headed back to the boys’ barrio.

I went straight to Jose’s house to meet up with Lorenzy and to use the internet. In all honesty, Jose and his mother have got to be to sweetest people I have ever met in my entire life. José’s mother was cooking up this big dinner to feed all of us, and might I say it was delicious!! She made baked chicken (one of my all time faves) and I swear I felt like I had just ordered it from a restaurant.

I slept the night with the Brien children in the boys’ barrio. The night came fast, but the morning came faster. I was woken up at 7am by Jason, one of the guys in the group, who came to pick me up to head back to Nicavangelists Headquarters.

Well if anyone knows me they know that I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON, so there I was, half asleep, walking down the road to the bus stop at 7am with Jason laughing at me. Knowing I had the most tired/ disgusted look on my face I asked, “What are you laughing at?” which only made him laugh harder.

We finally arrived at the bus stop and it was like perfect timing, the bus was there to pick us up. We got on the bus and headed down the road trying not to be thrown into different people because the drivers here are not easy on the breaks AT ALL. Well before we knew it there were so many people on the bus that we were practically smashed up against the window.

A few stops into our ride there was this old man who looked homeless and he kept chanting the same thing over and over again. The only word I understood was “dinero.”  I looked up and to my little surprise I saw Jason digging around in his pocket and looking at the change we’d received after paying for our bus ride. Whilst looking at me he shrugged his shoulders, and handed the old man his money.

I had the biggest smile on my face and my heart was so happy. The guys (Nicavangelists) really are so amazing! They come from very little to nothing, and yet they are still willing to give some if not all that they have to people whom are not as fortunate as them.

I honestly am so thrilled that God has placed me in this group. God is changing these boys and their hearts daily, and they are becoming AWESOME young men of God.

POST by JOSE: The Ladies in My Life

Jose cooking dinner in the Ohio Valley (West Virginia)

Hello my name is Jose Ballardo and I would like to tell you a little bit about how Jesus came into my life and how I accepted him as my Saviour.

My life in the past: I hadn’t yet accepted Jesus in my life. When I was 10 years old I was very spoiled by my mum. She worked hard and spent most of her time with my brother. I had a babysitter that took care of me. My mum gave us everything we wanted and we were very happy because we had everything we asked for.

Bad friendships: Over time, things became worse for our family. My mum got fired from her job and we didn’t have enough money. I would watch my mother cry because sometimes we didn’t even have food at home to eat. When I was 12 years old, I made some friends who were going through the same economic circumstances as me.

Bad decisions: My new friends were poor and knew my life. I felt comfortable being around them. Yet I saw that they would go out well dressed and with elegant style. They would say to me, “Do you want to look like us?”

I looked at myself and thought about all the poverty we were lived in. I said “okay, I would like to dress like you.” They said, “Good, let’s go steal some stuff… We are going to teach you how to do it!” So I followed them.

We walked to a specific location and then my friends said, “See the lady who is walking along the road? We will follow her and you're going to grab her around the neck and you’re going to throw her down to the ground and then steal all the money she has.”

I started to think about it, because the lady was very old and it seemed like a really bad idea. However, desperate times call for desperate measures and so I agreed to the plan. “Alrighty, I'll do it. I have nothing to lose…” So I approached the old lady and robbed her of the money she was carrying. I then ran fast and far. When we regrouped, we split up the money somewhat evenly and I felt full of adrenaline.

After the “old lady” incident, I started getting into fights with other people. I viewed it all as a game. However, my mum did not realise what had happened or any of the bad stuff that I was now doing. I would skip school to go and get into trouble with my so-called “friends.”

FLAWS THAT ENTERED MY LIFE: I would escape with my friends and they began to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, but I would only watch them. Then one day they said, “Jose, try this… You’re going to like it a lot and it will make you feel better, and you will forget about your troubles…” I asked them, “What is it?” They intelligently explained “It’s Marijuana.”

I started smoking the Marijuana and then began to feel really weird. After that I didn’t try it again, but I did try alcohol and cigarettes. Thank the LORD my body would reject these different drugs. I would ask my friends, “Why would you consume these drugs if you act like idiots after using them?” Their only response was to laugh at me.

The Sadness and suffering of my mother: as the time passed I would spend my time doing bad things. All I would think about were bad things and I listened to a lot of Satanic Rock and very violently music. I internally felt that my life was rubbish. I even came to a day where I cursed and insulted God’s name and blamed him for all my problems and thought about killing myself.

However, in these moments of rage, something would stop me. I would get really angry and I would yell and offend my mum and she began to cry because I treated her badly and would yell at her.

She had begun to notice me hanging around with bad people and doing bad things. I would never have acted like that in the past. My mother became very sick because of the problems I was causing her. She asked me, “Son, please change? Please go to church and seek God in your life?” It was funny to me and so I would laugh at her, “Who is God? For me God is like a whatever…”

Jesus touched my life: I was still into really bad things but one day a lady came and said to me, “Son, can I talk to you a little bit about Jesus?” I was 17 years old and I said “Okay, sure – why not…” This lady started talking to me about the Lord, and about the love he has for us.

She explained to me that Jesus sacrificially gave his life to save us and I hadn’t really known much about Him before this. When she had finished reading the word of God, she told me, “I’m inviting you to church tomorrow and if you don’t come I'll come get you and bring you myself.”  I told her I’d go because I had nothing better to do.

The next day I went to church to see what it was all about. When I entered, “wow” - I felt something different. I felt a heat in my whole body that comforted me and made me forget all my problems.

We started to sing and praise God. After that day I started going every week to church. God began to walk in my life. All the evil things I’d done were forgiven and I didn’t have a lot of problems in my life anymore.

Growing In Jesus: God has healed and changed me. Now I am a missionary and I give my testimony for the glory and the honour for God. Every day I pray for all the wonderful people that I have met on these trips.

My mother is healthy and everything is all falling into place, even though sometimes I fall down, God is there to pick me up and he says, “Come on son, I’m here with you. My hand is holding you.” In each church that I go to, I meet wonderful, nice people and I know that God has changed them like he has changed me.

Jose & Eliezer at Niagara Falls

POST by JOSE: Hit by a Bus

Ericson

Hello my name is Jose Ballardo and I am going to tell you a story about my friend Eric and how he witnessed a tragic death.

Eric had a friend named Marco. Now Marco was someone who liked to joke a lot but one day, he went to where his friends were at and asked them all a question. He asked, "What does it feel like to die?" Everyone said that they didn’t know and wondered aloud why he’d be asking them that. He responded with, "I don’t know" and then persisted with the question over the course of that whole day.

Later on Marco said "Goodbye everyone!" and when he said that to them, they all asked "Why are you saying goodbye?" He responded by saying, "I have a feeling that I am going to die so I want to say goodbye to you all."

The next day, Marcos woke up and got ready to go to school with his friend Luiz. His mum told him "Wait for me so that I can drop you off at school." However, Marcos said to his mother, "No it's okay. I can go on my own." With that he hugged and kissed her, and then headed off to school with Luiz.

Marcos and Luiz had passed halfway across a busy intersection, but before they could get across the second part of the street, the lights turned green. Luiz ran as hard as he could and made it across, yet Marcos didnt make it.

Whilst Marcos was running, a bus going full speed roared towards him. He was unable to avoid the bus, and whilst Marcos was almost out of the way, unfortunately his backpack got caught in the bus, causing it to pull him under the wheels.

Luiz was in shock from the event that occurred and then became distressed at seeing how the bus had run over Marcos, with his body going around in circles under the bus. Once the bus had driven past the accident site, Luis saw body parts belonging to Marcos all over the street. The feeling that Marcos had told everyone about dying, ended up coming true.

Luiz went running to his mum and he told her everything that had happened. When he finished telling her she couldn’t believe it and almost fainted. Luiz's mum went to Marcos' house and also told his mum what had happened.

Together they went to the place where Marcos had been killed. Marcos' mum picked up the remaining pieces of his destroyed body. The bus had already left but someone had called an ambulance and shortly after it arrived.

The ambulance took the body parts belonging to Marcos so that they could bury the remaining pieces.
Everyone that knew Marcos went to his funeral and they cried because they could not believe that he was dead.

It’s really important to pray to God all the time, especially when you are in doubt about something, because you never know what will happen.

God bless everyone and I hope you like my story.

POST by ERICSON: Disobedience and Death

Ericson and Jose, cooking up a storm in the Ohio Valley

This story is about Jose and was written by Ericson.

Rodrigo and I meet in school and we were really good friends, inseparable.

I studied with him all through primary (elementary) school and we grew up together like brothers. We looked after each other.

One day I went to his house to hang out for the whole day and mess around and have fun. We were playing together when we saw his mum faint. She had passed out on account of concerns that were troubling her. She shared these feelings with her son, but Rodrigo ignored his mother.

Rodrigo’s girlfriend came over later, inviting him to go with her to the beach. Of course he wanted to go and so he agreed to the plans.

We were both 10th grade high school students. One average Friday, Rodrigo told all of his classmates that he was going to the beach with his girlfriend and he explained that his mum didn’t want him to go because of the feelings she’d earlier. But he didn’t care and so the next day he went to the beach.

He was at the beach with his girlfriend and her family and her friends. They lit a bonfire in the evening and after they started to drink alcohol. He decided to go swimming in the surf, so he told his girlfriend to go with him and both of them went in. They were already out quite a way when he told his girlfriend that he was going to go in deeper.

When he had swum out to where the waves were breaking, a big wave overcame him and smashed him into some rocks. He didn’t come out.

Rodrigo’s girlfriend’s family had the difficult task of explaining to Rodrigo’s mother that he went into the water but never came out. Twenty four hours later, his body was found floating in the water, completely destroyed. His face was deformed, his body beaten and his eyes were no longer in his body. They took Rodrigo’s body to his mother.

The family held a funeral for his body and his mother told everyone, “He didn’t obey me.” His poor mother was brokenhearted along with the rest of his family.

This horrible tragedy occurred because Rodrigo didn’t obey the Bible, which tells us to honour our father and mother and our days on Earth will be long and prosperous.

POST by JOSE: AGRADECIMIENTO A LAS IGLECIAS

Jose in one of the MANY Youth Group rooms we visited (stayed in)

I really just want to thank the American Church!

Jesus is in the hearts of the Christians in the Churches of the USA.

Receiving us: The first day our group went to a church in the USA was an exceptional moment for me. We were able to get together and fellowship with people who had big hearts, people who were very special, people who were filled with faith and love towards Jesus.

Hospitality: The Christians in America gave us love and kindness. They gave us hospitality. We met a lot of true people that were sincere, respectful, and very warm towards us.

Nicaraguan and American Christians: We, Nicaraguan Christians, have had really good experiences with churches in the USA. We shared with them about our lives, and they opened their hearts towards us, listening intently to us about our past and problems.

Christ in their hearts: The people we have met have Christ in their hearts. They adore Him with all that they are. We are brothers in the faith. They have opened their hearts and ears to listen, regardless of whether our stories are good or bad. I have those who we’ve visited all in my heart.

Gratitude: We are a family in Jesus Christ. It does not matter where we are from or what color skin we have. The churches that we have visited are very special to me.

To everyone: We have you in our hearts and have a lot of gratitude to you for opening your hearts towards us. I thank God that I have met you guys.

Thank you so much for receiving us with open hearts. Everyone here at Capital on the Edge are extremely grateful to you!

God bless you and protect you.

Amen.

POST by JOSE: Trauma Mia (Mumma)

Jose, of Capital on the Edge, flying with Taca

My mum’s childhood was one of the cruelest experiences that I have ever heard of. Everything started when she was just 8 years old. My grandmother got together with a man who wanted to abuse my mum. He would tell her to leave the house and he would not give her anything to eat. My mum told my grandmother about it all, but she did not believe that she did not have a normal childhood.

My mum escapes her parents’ house:

Every time my grandfather told her to leave the house, she would sleep on the streets and would be really hungry and would suffer. She decided to escape all the suffering and abuse.

Relationship of my mum and dad:

My mum ran away from her house at the age of 10. She had a boyfriend who is my dad. He gave her a place to stay and they lived together. He was 19 years old and my mum was only 11.

Abuse to my mum:

After a while, my mum became pregnant. She was only 13 years old. She bore her first son, my first brother, who died. This death affected my mum a heap. At the age of 14, she had me.

Then my dad started to change and he would hit her and treat her bad. There were a lot of times where he would grab her hair and pull her across the room and sometimes he would try to kill her. She had my brother at the age of 17, yet her boyfriend kept on abusing her.

The abondoning:

At the age of 18, she decided to run away from the abuse. She went to another country leaving us with him. Years passed and we did not hear anything about our mother. My dad said that she had been bad to us and that she had abandoned us.

After many years my brother and I grew up. One day I was playing and I saw an elegant and beautiful lady and she approached me and said "son, how are you?" and at that moment I felt really happy and all the hatred I held for my mother, disappeared.

Forgiveness to my mother:

My mum took us with her and we were all very happy. Though, she was the happiest out of us all. The most important thing is that she forgave my grandparents for all of the damage that they had done to her, and the traumatising pain that they left her with.

Years passed and the economic situation became more and more difficult. There were times where we would go hungry and she would always prefer to give us her food so that she would be hungry instead of us.

My mum is my hero and a marvelous woman. I love her a lot. We are extremely poor but at least we are together. I will always help her. I love her.

Forgiveness sets you free:

The best advice you can get is that it does not matter what your mother does, nor what she is, she will always be there to protect you and take care of you. She is your best friend and forgiving makes you feel free. Thank you God for giving us all marvelous mothers!

POST by JOSE: Dios te Cuida en Los Momentos Más Duros

Jose with his pal Ronny...

About two years ago I had an experience that involved feeling the presence of God by my side. He guided and protected me from a lot of dangers.

One day a friend of mine invited me to go with her to church, because they were having an evangelistic service. I decided to accept the invitation and went along with my friend.

We went along and I enjoyed the preaching and how they shared Jesus. I was very happy and started to go every Sunday to church.

One Sunday I went to church and everything started out great.  I liked feeling the joy of the Lord and the thrill of being together with other Church folk who also loved the Lord.

I felt very happy because before I knew Christ, I did not believe in him. Things would happen to me in my life, and I would be like “why are these things happening to me? Why do these bad things ALWAYS happen to me?” I would start crying and felt like I didn’t have answers to my questions.

Most of the time I felt like life wasn’t worth living and that there was no point in going on, and that life just didn’t make sense.

Living life like that, meant that there was no meaning for me. It made me push people away. I felt invisible. I did not want to talk to anyone. People would talk to me and I would answer them with unkind words.

I hated everyone and I didn’t care about anyone. I felt invincible. But when I went to that church, everything changed and I felt comforted.

One day, the service went on for a little longer than usual. After the service, some brothers from church offered me a lift in their car and dropped me at a bus stop. I waited a long time for the bus, my mode of transport for getting home, but it never came.

I was very scared because my house was a long way away from where I had been waiting for the bus. So I started to pray to Jesus. I asked him, “Lord, please protect me from danger and don’t let anything bad happen to me. Please take care of me.”

At that very moment, I started to walk to my house. I needed to go through places that were very dangerous, where bad things happen. I kept on walking and praying asking God to protect me.

I did not know the way, because the city is big and at times I felt lost. Yet God guided me with the wind. He directed me and told me which way to go. I went through places that might have been dangerous, but no one came out to hurt me.

The trip home on a bus takes about an hour, but God assisted me and my travel time was not too long - I arrived home in just an hour and a half! I was safe and unharmed, ALL thanks to God.

At that moment I knew that he was always with me protecting me. When you have problems that feel pretty hard, ask Jesus to help you, because he is always aware, no matter what. Never lose faith. Faith moves mountains!

Always trust the Lord, because he will help you with the hardest problems of your life.

POST by JOSE: Important Business

Jose flying away

Hello! God bless all of the nations of the earth, everyone in them, and every language group.

My name is Jose Bayardo and I'm from Nicaragua. I live in a very poor neighborhood where people don’t have much. My community is filled with crime and drugs,  but thank God I found a wonderful family who gave us a hand. Elizabeth and Jed Brien assisted us, and took us out of our dangerous world.

With their effort, we now have a group that is learning about who God is, and we have him in our lives. Our hearts are changing and this is obvious through the new people that we have become.  God has so much love for us, His Creation.

When I was a child, I wanted to travel to the United States of America. Now  I want to know new people and make new friends, brothers in Jesus Christ. I always prayed and  asked the Lord to travel to the United States of America. God has answered my prayers.

God is amazing, he has made my dreams come true. God has helped us come to America, to perform our street theatre production in Churches, so that people will know God.

Another one of my dreams is to help and support my mother. I really want my mother to meet a man who will be her husband, a man who will appreciate my mother, because she has suffered a lot in her life.

I want the best for my mother. God is wonderful and he wants the best for us, his children, his creation. He wants us, Capital on the Edge, to walk on the right path, the path that is just.  All of our group want to learn and we thank God in Heaven for Jed and Elizabeth, who have given us this wonderful opportunity to go and perform for the folks in the USA.

In poorer places, where there are many bad things, they have supported the people and we have performed our amazing street theatre production.  We help Jed and Elizabeth with the production.

Thank you for listening to the goals and the dreams of my heart. You play an important role in our work.
