POST by ORLANDO: Vida de Mi Padre

Orlando taking the wheel, on a Capital on the Edge trek to Wisconsin

I want to tell you about the life of a restored father.

My name is Orlando and I want to tell you about how my dad’s life has changed. My father’s name is Marvin and he is from Masaya, Nicaragua. He was born in 1968. He has suffered and had a lot of really hard times in his life.

My dad is the only man in his family, apart from his father. He has worked since the age of 8 years old. He worked hard because his parents made him work - he was the only male! He suffered horribly, being treated poorly. Often times, his parents would tell him to leave the house because they used a lot of drugs and drank alcohol until they were drunk.

At the age of 16, the military grabbed him because of problems in Nicaragua. That’s where he learnt to fix cars that had been in accidents and paint them. But even there he suffered through the pain of hunger, because he was not able to leave that place.

A long time later he was able to leave the military and then he decided to look for a job. However, Nicaragua does not have a lot of jobs available (80% unemployment) and if you get a job, it most likely won’t pay a lot of money.

Because of that, my dad decided to try travelling to Guatamala, a country close to Nicaragua. There he found an uncle who had the same job as my father. He was there for just a few years and then decided to immigrate back to Nicaragua.

At the age 26, my father decided to study and that’s when he met my mum. After a while they were married and then my mum became pregnant. When my brother was just 1 ½ years old I was born.

Approximately 5 years later my dad became an alcoholic because of the bad examples that his parents had been. He started hitting my brother and I, and my mum would almost always be crying because he was very offensive. His main struggles were drugs, alcohol and womanising.

Often times he would be lost on the streets vomiting from the alcohol, but I would go and yell at him "Dad stop it!!!" I would say in my mind "God help him! Give him strength and let him understand!"

Thanks to God, I used a lot of people to try and help me, help my dad. It took about 12 years for him to change, but thanks to God, He touched his heart and he’s now a changed man.

My dad then sent me to a Christian school and the Lord truly was helping us. The teachers were Christian people. They told us that our parents should be going to the same church that the teachers of the school attended.

My dad would help out and go to church, so that he could see even greater changes in his life, and give his testimony so as to encourage others, showing that God had changed his life in a marvelous way.

Now, thanks to God, he is a servant of God. He has started a church with God’s help and now has many members in his church. The change is huge because God walks with my father and my family.

Everyone who truly seeks God will find him. Thank you for your attention and God bless you!

Getting ready for a rehearsal at Zimmerman Community Church, in Minnesota

POST by JOSE: Important Business

Jose flying away

Hello! God bless all of the nations of the earth, everyone in them, and every language group.

My name is Jose Bayardo and I'm from Nicaragua. I live in a very poor neighborhood where people don’t have much. My community is filled with crime and drugs,  but thank God I found a wonderful family who gave us a hand. Elizabeth and Jed Brien assisted us, and took us out of our dangerous world.

With their effort, we now have a group that is learning about who God is, and we have him in our lives. Our hearts are changing and this is obvious through the new people that we have become.  God has so much love for us, His Creation.

When I was a child, I wanted to travel to the United States of America. Now  I want to know new people and make new friends, brothers in Jesus Christ. I always prayed and  asked the Lord to travel to the United States of America. God has answered my prayers.

God is amazing, he has made my dreams come true. God has helped us come to America, to perform our street theatre production in Churches, so that people will know God.

Another one of my dreams is to help and support my mother. I really want my mother to meet a man who will be her husband, a man who will appreciate my mother, because she has suffered a lot in her life.

I want the best for my mother. God is wonderful and he wants the best for us, his children, his creation. He wants us, Capital on the Edge, to walk on the right path, the path that is just.  All of our group want to learn and we thank God in Heaven for Jed and Elizabeth, who have given us this wonderful opportunity to go and perform for the folks in the USA.

In poorer places, where there are many bad things, they have supported the people and we have performed our amazing street theatre production.  We help Jed and Elizabeth with the production.

Thank you for listening to the goals and the dreams of my heart. You play an important role in our work.

POST by LEIKI: Leiki's Life

Leiki, with a renewed hope in his heart

My name is Leiki and I am 12 years old.

I want to share about my life and my family’s situation. My parents are divorced and my dad is very bad. He wants to kick us out of our house and he never provides money, nor gives me clothes. Yet still, my mum gives us all love, clothes, money and food. Although my dad doesn’t give us anything, my family is still happy.

I am especially happy because I am traveling with my friend Yasser, and Elizabeth. I also want to go to see my friend Raffy. I'm really happy because I'm in a group that practices “Tricking” (like Parkour: utilises Gymnastics and Martial Arts) and “Bboy” (Breakdancing). I am a little bit sad because my brother will not travel with us this time and I will also really miss my family.

Now that Leiki lives at Capital on the Edge (with his mother), he attends school 5 days per week

When I go and visit my dad, he doesn’t want me to return to my mother. He says that he wants me to live in a house that has discipline. But I want to live with my mum and I really enjoy using the Play Station (at the Brien’s house). I love being with my brother, sisters and my mum, because my father doesn’t really want me.

Leiki carrying his seat to class

At times I do not want to practice (Tricking & Bboy) because I am very tired. Yet I'm very happy as I have learnt how to do the “Crescent” and will also learn how to do the “Bolt” (Tricking techniques).

Leiki in his NEW classroom

In reality both I and my family are very sad, because my dad is very bad. When I go to my dad, I know he will not let me leave and then I have to escape, which is extremely difficult because my dad locks the doors.

POST by ORLANDO: Growing Up Nica!

Orlando Huembes

Hello my name is Orlando Huembes and I am from Managua, Nicaragua. I want to tell you a bit about my life.

I used to live in a workshop for smashed up cars. In this workshop they’d straighten out the cars’ bodies, painting them and repairing their engines. I used to live with my father, my mother and my brother.

In this workshop there were many incidents where I suffered an accident on my fingers and knees, due to the carelessness of the car mechanics. However, I was a child and I didn’t know what I should and shouldn’t be grabbing.

Ond day, when I was just 7 years old, a large metal bus part fell from many meters above onto my head. I was immediately hospitalised for the injury I’d suffered on my head. I had to stay in hospital for fifteen days.

Through all of our trials my father, from the sweat of his brow, continued to work and make our lives better.  Regardless, it was not sufficient. My father wasn’t able to provide enough of an income for our family and because of this he was rarely able to spend time with us.

And so I saw the need to work and help my family, irrespective of the job requirements. I decided to sell water at the traffic lights and beg for money. My Mum thought I was at school, but mostly I wasn’t. I needed to study but I left school to go and get money because sometimes my dad spent his earnings on liquor.

It was a very difficult time for my mother, as we didn’t have food to eat, and providing meals is the first priority for a mum.

My friends told me to come with them to where the busses stop. There people would give us money if we begged. And so we went, praying that God would help us. If we went and begged for money, God would help us. I will always remember this moment in my life.

I want to learn and to do things better each day with God's help. We all have a purpose in this life and at times we need to sacrifice for each other.

Thanks, it was a pleasure being able to share this moment with you. Thanks for taking the time to read about my experiences. Regards, from Capital on the edge, on the Old Road to Leon,  in Nicaragua.

Yordy & Orlando at Capital on the Edge

POST by JONNY: The Comfort of Christ in Times of Crisis

Jonny of Capital on the Edge (Nicaragua)

Hello my name is Johnny. My story is based on a very poor family.

In 2008 a family lived in a house which they rented. They worked hard, collecting junk from the streets (mostly metal), which they then sold in order to pay their rent. They worked 7 days per week, all day, and never missed a rent payment.

The girls in this family were mostly aged between two and nine years of age. The girls in this family walked the streets, helping their grandmother collect junk to sell (they didn’t go to school) because their mother had left them to be with a man.

In 2010 this family was evicted from their house, by their landlord, and this made my mother very sad. My mother asked this family if they would like to sleep in our house for the night. They quickly agreed.

The next morning my father and mother discussed the problem for a long time. This situation was serious and troublesome. My parents came up with a solution, to have the family live with us permanently. My father, brother and I constructed a one-room dwelling for this family to live in.

With time the grandmother began to really trust my mother. One day she explained to my mother why they had been suddenly evicted.

The landlord had been raping her granddaughters and giving them money. The grandmother didn’t know about it at the time. Eventually the neighbours worked out what was happening and they told the grandmother, who became furious with this man. She confronted him about this tragedy and he became angry and sent them all out onto the street.

This family is now very happy, because they live in peace. Sometimes they do not have enough to eat, but they are free!

My Mum wants this family to be a part of our family, because that is the heart of God and it is what he would want for them.

God bless you, Amen.
