POST by MYRON: Look How Far I've Come

Myron at Niagara Falls, with Canada in the background

Five years ago, everything at home was very different. My dad would drink a lot of alcohol, a lot! He used to drink almost every day. My father would only cause destruction in the life of my mother and my siblings.
We were forced to go and sleep at my grandmother’s house. My grandmother was very loving and kind to me, because I was the youngest out of my siblings.

The years passed by and I was growing. My dad was starting to stop drinking, and me and my brothers and my aunt would always go to church. We learnt a lot about the Bible. I was eleven years old and I grew close to God in my heart.

My older brother started to drink a lot of alcohol, and he became a gangster. My mother was working and so was my dad, and I was going to school like other kids in my community. On my birthday we went out to eat and to go and see some cool places. My mum was very proud of me, and my dad was too.

Months went by and I met the Brien family and their group. I now am a part of the Nicavangelists dance crew, and that’s why I’m here in America. I am proud to tell you my stories. This is all I have today, thanks for reading.

POST by ORLANDO: Growing Up Nica!

Orlando Huembes

Hello my name is Orlando Huembes and I am from Managua, Nicaragua. I want to tell you a bit about my life.

I used to live in a workshop for smashed up cars. In this workshop they’d straighten out the cars’ bodies, painting them and repairing their engines. I used to live with my father, my mother and my brother.

In this workshop there were many incidents where I suffered an accident on my fingers and knees, due to the carelessness of the car mechanics. However, I was a child and I didn’t know what I should and shouldn’t be grabbing.

Ond day, when I was just 7 years old, a large metal bus part fell from many meters above onto my head. I was immediately hospitalised for the injury I’d suffered on my head. I had to stay in hospital for fifteen days.

Through all of our trials my father, from the sweat of his brow, continued to work and make our lives better.  Regardless, it was not sufficient. My father wasn’t able to provide enough of an income for our family and because of this he was rarely able to spend time with us.

And so I saw the need to work and help my family, irrespective of the job requirements. I decided to sell water at the traffic lights and beg for money. My Mum thought I was at school, but mostly I wasn’t. I needed to study but I left school to go and get money because sometimes my dad spent his earnings on liquor.

It was a very difficult time for my mother, as we didn’t have food to eat, and providing meals is the first priority for a mum.

My friends told me to come with them to where the busses stop. There people would give us money if we begged. And so we went, praying that God would help us. If we went and begged for money, God would help us. I will always remember this moment in my life.

I want to learn and to do things better each day with God's help. We all have a purpose in this life and at times we need to sacrifice for each other.

Thanks, it was a pleasure being able to share this moment with you. Thanks for taking the time to read about my experiences. Regards, from Capital on the edge, on the Old Road to Leon,  in Nicaragua.

Yordy & Orlando at Capital on the Edge

POST by JOSE: My Life

Jose Bayardo in Nicaragua (Capital on the Edge)

Hello, my name is Jose Bayardo and I am 21 years old.

I live with both my mum and my sisters. I was born in a village called Rosita, which lies to the North of Managua, in Nicaragua, towards the Atlantic Coast.

My mum says that when I was born, I was a very sick child. I spent most of my earliest days in hospitals, suffering from many diseases. However, with time I became healthy and strong.

A younger Jose

I came to live in Managua when I was just 9 years old. We have experienced many struggles in our lives, and it has been tough for us being raised without a father to support us.

My mum found it the most difficult and at times wanted to take her own life because of the poverty we lived in.  We faced our economic circumstances alone, and some days, due to my unemployment, couldn’t even afford to eat.

From time to time my mum has gone to other countries seeking employment. I was always left to watch my sisters. They would go out and look for bread for us to eat. Sometimes what they had to do was wrong.

Jose's sister and her son

My life has been very difficult but I never thought of death as an option. I have tried many vices, like marijuana, cigarettes and alcohol, but thank God I did not like any of them.

However, thanks to God everything in our lives has now improved. We have met a wonderful family, who are very generous and kind. I thank God for his kindness and for Elizabeth and Jed, and the Brien family.

God has also given me a great opportunity and I will be traveling to the USA. God put Elizabeth in our lives and this is a very important moment for us. We are working hard, rehearsing our production.

God bless you all!

POST by JONNY: Finding Happiness in Homelessness

Jonny, before his time with Capital on the Edge

This story comes from my childhood.

When I was 8 years old my family lived in BILLA LIVERTA. At that time my brothers experienced a problem with some guys who came to a home which my family was visiting. About 40 guys began to throw rocks at the house and my dad was standing in the door and was not hurt too badly by the rock throwiang. The family we were visiting became very nervous about what was going on, because the bad blokes wanted to destroy their house!

But my dad had a gun and threatened all of the men with it who were damaging the house. The men, when they saw the gun, ran away. One of the rock-throwing-men hit the dog with a machete on it’s neck. The dog was dying and my dad was very angry and so he went to the police to submit a complaint, but the police did not want to go where the problem was.

My dad was very upset about what was happening and my Mum agreed that we had to leave this place (because of the violence in the neighbourhood). And so we left that place permanently and we lost our house and everything inside. But now we are well, thank God. But now we do not own a home. However, JESUS CHRIST is great and will help us and give us blessings to keep on going. Jesus is my shepherd and I don’t lack anything with Him.
