POST by ABEN: 'Cause the power, you're supplying. It's electrifying!

Aben, Creative Director for the Nicavangelists

Hello friends, my name is Aben and the story I’m sharing with you today is very painful and sad for me.

When I was 14 years old I was a street kid. My friends were a negative influence on me. One day, something terribly bad happened…

I was close to my home, like 100 meters away, and since I was a bad boy I decided to try and rob my neighbour’s house. However, where I live many people try to make a living out of stealing, and the house I was attempting to break into had previously experienced theft. The owners had become wise and installed an electric fence. I didn’t realise this, and so I tried to climb over their wall to steal stuff for money.

At the very same moment I placed both of my hands and my left foot on the fence and immediately felt a surge of electricity course through my entire body.

My heart began to pound five times faster than normal.

My head became discombobulated and the strain was unbearable. I pulled hard but my hands wouldn’t obey, they wouldn’t let go of the wire.

Right then I felt as though my whole body was an earthquake, shaking me wildly this way and that! My hands began to bleed as the fence ripped my skin apart. I lost all of my strength. My body would not listen to me and obey it’s instructions. I couldn’t move at all.

With my other foot resting on a post I frantically tried to push myself back. All to no avail. I realised I was doomed, about to die. Nobody was around to help me.

Then I thought, “God, please forgive me for all of the bad things I’ve done. I repent! I do not want to die!” Immediately I felt a gushing of power in my other foot. Once again I tried kicking myself backwards with the aid of that post and was miraculously freed from that fence.

As I fell to the ground, I landed on a big rock. I hurt my neck but this was of no significance to me, God had saved me from death! My hands were hurt, my heart returned to normal and I was a little scared by this incident. Right there I said these words:

“Thank you Heavenly Father for giving me another chance at life. There is no power that can defeat or stop you. I will continue to believe in you. Thank you God!”

This is what I’ve learnt. God can do whatever he wants with us. However, he wants us to approach him with our own free will and with a repentant heart.

POST by STIVEY: Misguided Melvin

The Stivey we Know and Love - Deeply Feeling and Contemplative

Hi everyone! I’m going to share a friend’s story with you…

One day my friend, Melvin, shared with me that he was being mistreated by his parents. He explained in detail that they were using and abusing him. Melvin was ordinarily a really cheerful chap, but his parents ruined his life by making him live sinfully. Melvin’s parents ordered him to steal in the streets and supermarkets so that they had the means to satisfy their cravings for alcohol and cigarettes.

Well time went by and I lost contact with Melvin. He quit school. Two years after learning about Melvin’s lifestyle I ran into him on the street. He looked really different and was sporting several tattoos. We started talking and he told me that he had become a thief. After talking for a while we went our separate ways.

One year after chatting with Melvin on the street I saw his older brother.  I asked how Melvin and he were doing. Melvin’s brother began to cry. He explained to me that Melvin had died. I asked what had happened and listened as the story unfolded.

Melvin was robbing the son of a police officer and viciously stabbed him. He ran away leaving the son on the street. The Police soon arrested Melvin for his violent crime. The arresting officer was the kid’s father.

He took Melvin into a secret room and shot Melvin five times in the head and six times in his torso. He then proceeded to chop off all of his toes. I was shocked by the way that he had died and thought it a terrible shame, however I realised that the parents were also to blame as they had never taught him any manners.

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4

POST by JOSE: The Ladies in My Life

Jose cooking dinner in the Ohio Valley (West Virginia)

Hello my name is Jose Ballardo and I would like to tell you a little bit about how Jesus came into my life and how I accepted him as my Saviour.

My life in the past: I hadn’t yet accepted Jesus in my life. When I was 10 years old I was very spoiled by my mum. She worked hard and spent most of her time with my brother. I had a babysitter that took care of me. My mum gave us everything we wanted and we were very happy because we had everything we asked for.

Bad friendships: Over time, things became worse for our family. My mum got fired from her job and we didn’t have enough money. I would watch my mother cry because sometimes we didn’t even have food at home to eat. When I was 12 years old, I made some friends who were going through the same economic circumstances as me.

Bad decisions: My new friends were poor and knew my life. I felt comfortable being around them. Yet I saw that they would go out well dressed and with elegant style. They would say to me, “Do you want to look like us?”

I looked at myself and thought about all the poverty we were lived in. I said “okay, I would like to dress like you.” They said, “Good, let’s go steal some stuff… We are going to teach you how to do it!” So I followed them.

We walked to a specific location and then my friends said, “See the lady who is walking along the road? We will follow her and you're going to grab her around the neck and you’re going to throw her down to the ground and then steal all the money she has.”

I started to think about it, because the lady was very old and it seemed like a really bad idea. However, desperate times call for desperate measures and so I agreed to the plan. “Alrighty, I'll do it. I have nothing to lose…” So I approached the old lady and robbed her of the money she was carrying. I then ran fast and far. When we regrouped, we split up the money somewhat evenly and I felt full of adrenaline.

After the “old lady” incident, I started getting into fights with other people. I viewed it all as a game. However, my mum did not realise what had happened or any of the bad stuff that I was now doing. I would skip school to go and get into trouble with my so-called “friends.”

FLAWS THAT ENTERED MY LIFE: I would escape with my friends and they began to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, but I would only watch them. Then one day they said, “Jose, try this… You’re going to like it a lot and it will make you feel better, and you will forget about your troubles…” I asked them, “What is it?” They intelligently explained “It’s Marijuana.”

I started smoking the Marijuana and then began to feel really weird. After that I didn’t try it again, but I did try alcohol and cigarettes. Thank the LORD my body would reject these different drugs. I would ask my friends, “Why would you consume these drugs if you act like idiots after using them?” Their only response was to laugh at me.

The Sadness and suffering of my mother: as the time passed I would spend my time doing bad things. All I would think about were bad things and I listened to a lot of Satanic Rock and very violently music. I internally felt that my life was rubbish. I even came to a day where I cursed and insulted God’s name and blamed him for all my problems and thought about killing myself.

However, in these moments of rage, something would stop me. I would get really angry and I would yell and offend my mum and she began to cry because I treated her badly and would yell at her.

She had begun to notice me hanging around with bad people and doing bad things. I would never have acted like that in the past. My mother became very sick because of the problems I was causing her. She asked me, “Son, please change? Please go to church and seek God in your life?” It was funny to me and so I would laugh at her, “Who is God? For me God is like a whatever…”

Jesus touched my life: I was still into really bad things but one day a lady came and said to me, “Son, can I talk to you a little bit about Jesus?” I was 17 years old and I said “Okay, sure – why not…” This lady started talking to me about the Lord, and about the love he has for us.

She explained to me that Jesus sacrificially gave his life to save us and I hadn’t really known much about Him before this. When she had finished reading the word of God, she told me, “I’m inviting you to church tomorrow and if you don’t come I'll come get you and bring you myself.”  I told her I’d go because I had nothing better to do.

The next day I went to church to see what it was all about. When I entered, “wow” - I felt something different. I felt a heat in my whole body that comforted me and made me forget all my problems.

We started to sing and praise God. After that day I started going every week to church. God began to walk in my life. All the evil things I’d done were forgiven and I didn’t have a lot of problems in my life anymore.

Growing In Jesus: God has healed and changed me. Now I am a missionary and I give my testimony for the glory and the honour for God. Every day I pray for all the wonderful people that I have met on these trips.

My mother is healthy and everything is all falling into place, even though sometimes I fall down, God is there to pick me up and he says, “Come on son, I’m here with you. My hand is holding you.” In each church that I go to, I meet wonderful, nice people and I know that God has changed them like he has changed me.

Jose & Eliezer at Niagara Falls

POST by JONNY: Hitchhiker's Guide to a Strategy...

Mauricio in Costa Rica

Hello my name is JOHNNY

My story is about an experience that I had, going to my country’s neighbour, COSTA  RICA, in order to represent my homeland, Nicaragua.

In 2011 I went to an international event where two dancers fought on the dance floor against two other dancers, with competitors being eliminated in groups of two. We won the event, my friend Mauricio and I.

Five days after this competition in San Jose, we received a telephone call from Costa Rica. The person on the other end of the line advised that myself and my dancing group companion, Mauricio, had been elected by the bboy organisation in Costa Rica (the board of the Costa Rican dancing federation) to represent our country, Nicaragua, in future events.

Jonny in Costa Rica

One day my dancing companion, Mauricio and I, were wondering and discussing how we could ever get to the dancing event in Costa Rica. He didn’t have any money, and neither did I. On top of that, neither of us were had a job at the time.

We thought about who we could borrow money from and then I thought of someone. Mauricio agreed that we should ask for a loan. And so we went along to my friend’s house, and low-and-behold, the chap was at home!

Jonny with some Costa Rican junior talent

We explained our situation to my friend, and he said “of course I’ll lend you the money for your trip to Costa Rica. When you get the money back again, just repay me then.”

The next day I went with Mauricio and bought the coach ticket. We would be departing Managua rather early in the morning, at 4am, on the 23rd of February, 2011.

The Boys with local Costa Rican talent

Five days after purchasing our coach tickets, we left Costa Rica-bound. However, when we arrived at the border between our two countries, all of the people on our coach exited the bus and proceeded to the immigration hall. Each one of us were asked by the immigration officials (Police) for our passports. Mauricio, my friend, told me he was hungry, and persuaded me to go with him in order to buy something to eat.

When we went to buy food, I told Mauricio that I needed to go to the toilet.  Mauricio agreed and went by himself to buy a snack.  When I came out of the bathroom I saw Mauricio running towards me. “What happened?” I called out. “All of my things have been stolen!” I was shocked. “Who stole your things?” I inquired. “Some thieves” Mauricio accurately replied.

Jonny dancing on the streets of San Jose

We headed for the bus. When we arrived we were told by the coach staff that we would not be allowed to board the bus, because we didn’t possess tickets. The bus left us at the border. We didn’t know what to do.

At that very moment, a young man of approximately 25 years appeared and told us that he’d watched our videos on Youtube, that he knew of us, and that he’d like to one day watch our crew dance. We told our new friend that we were desperate to travel to Costa Rica, for in San Jose we would represent Nicaragua in a dancing competition. Our friend explained that he knew of a path nearby, that we could travel along, in order to cross the border.

Mauricio dancing on the streets of San Jose

We went on foot with this fellow and traversed the border to Costa Rica. When we made it safely through, our friend crossed back, because he had to return for work. Once on the main highway again, we tried to hitchhike. However, nobody offered us a lift.

So I said to Mauricio, “come on, let’s walk. Somebody will eventually give us a ride.” Mauricio agreed, and we started walking towards San Jose at 9am. We walked for five hours.

Mauricio, the tinman

At 2pm a van stopped and told us to get in. “The capital of Costa Rica is 340 kms away” he said. “I will talk with the Police and they will help you.” We looked at each other, and then at our Good Samaritan and said “Okay, sounds great. Thank you.”

The chap took us to the Police station and then took off. He was headed in a different direction and needed to get moving. The Police beckoned us in and began to ask us questions. “Why are you walking?” We said “We’ve been robbed, but we’re here legally. We have the correct documentation.”

Jonny, on the coach to Costa Rica

The Police asked us if we knew of someone who could help us. “Yes”, was our reply. We asked to use their telephone so that we could call the event organisers. The Police kindly offered a loan of their phone and we called our colleagues in Costa Rica and asked them if they could send us some money, so that we could get to the capital.

Our friends very graciously lent us the $20 dollars we needed. Mauricio and I walked five kilometers to a place where we could withdraw the money for our bus tickets. We bought our tickets and began to wait. I fell asleep and Mauricio chatted away on the telephone he’d recharged with the money we’d received. Our bus, left without us! We continued to wait, and luckily the next bus allowed us to board. San Jose at last!

Mauricio hitchhiking

When we arrived in the massive city, nobody was there to greet us. We were nervous, as we’re Nicaraguan and didn’t know much about Costa Rica. However, Mauricio had a sister who lived in Costa Rica, but he had no clue where she lived.

In this moment I asked a complete stranger if he knew where the local bus terminal was. He said that he did, and offered to take us there personally. Mauricio asked if he could borrow our tour guide’s phone for a moment, so that he could look at his facebook and try to locate his sister’s phone number. Our guide obliged Mauricio.

Mauricio with his sister and her kids/friends in Costa Rica

Mauricio found his sister’s phone number and called her on the telephone. She told us to wait at the bus station and she’d come and get us. Two hours later, and in she waltzed. It was so good to see her. She took us with her to her house.

We hadn’t eaten all day and were starving hungry. We’d been up since 4am! We told Mauricio’s sister that we were hungry and she made us some food. It was like breakfast for us!

Mauricio and his brother inlaw

The following day, we called and spoke with staff from the competition that we would be participating in. They explained that they were no longer having us come and compete in the event. We went along anyway, unsure as to why we were no longer to be included.

The View from our House in Costa Rica

The following day, we were still unsure as to how we’d make it back to Nicaragua. We decided to busk, dancing in the streets, in order to raise the money we needed for our bus fare. It took us twenty days to raise the money. We’d been on quite the trip, and were now excited to return to our beloved country, proud that we were able to represent Nicaragua, even if only dancing on the streets.

God bless you for reading this story. Thank you!

Jonny!

POST by STIVEY: Thankfully the One Who Got A Way

Once, my brother was playing football. Well football is his favourite sport and he was playing in a park and a guy was there. After my brother had finished playing, the fellow who was also at the park wanted to steal my brother’s money.

My brother left the park at great speed, running towards our house. When he looked back there wasn’t just one chap chasing him, there were now two. My brother ran to where my cousins were. My cousins grabbed rocks from the ground and started pelting them at the would-be-robbers, who thanks to my cousins, ran away.

My brother didn’t know it, but the thieves lived in the same neighborhood as us. I think the robbers were waiting for their time of revenge. They didn’t act, they just waited.

One day, the robbers were watching my brother. They wanted to stab him with a knife. The thieves almost succeeded. My brother was fighting with one of them and the other pulled out a knife and threw it at my brother’s neck. However, my brother saw the knife coming and ducked away from it, only being slightly nicked on his neck.

Thanks to God, someone called for my cousins, who arrived on the scene quick-smart. My cousins started throwing stones at the two bad dudes and they started to run, but my cousin hit one of them. He lay on the ground in pain and the other ran away and left his companion lying there in the dirt.

My cousins wasted no time in doling out their punishment. They beat him. They nearly killed him! Then my brother said to my cousins “stop it, or he'll die!”

The police arrived shortly after and took the robber away as their prisoner and put him in prison. And so they never tried to steal from my brother again and thank God he was not killed.
