POST by JAIRO: Discipline Dilemma

Jairito posing for a photograph in the BEAUTIFUL Ohio Valley

Hello my name is Jairito and I am going to share with you about the life of a friend.

My friend was really abused and beaten by his parents. One day at his house, his dad hit him because my friend had hit his sister. When his dad struck him, he hit him really hard and when his mum got home, his dad told her that my friend had hit his sister and then his mum beat him really hard as well.

One day my friend’s dad told him off for not behaving in the house and he hit him really hard once again. After he had been beaten a lot because he was not behaving, he started to behave more.

Then, after a few years, he became rebellious. He escaped from his house and made a collection of really bad friends. He also became addicted to many things. One day his parents found him smoking with his ‘friends’. His parents walked up to him and they beat the living daylights out of him once again.

His parents became frantic not knowing how to get their son to behave, and so his family and him went to church to pray for my friend and for all the bad things that he had done. Whilst they were praying for him, he was not behaving himself and when they got home they beat him again.

After being hit so much, it was in his mind that he would always get hit. He stopped caring altogether about how he behaved. Soon he was purple and red because they would hit him so much and so hard. His parents saw him and his terrible state, and they felt really bad and so they stopped hitting him and they began being to live a happier life.

POST by ERICSON: Disobedience and Death

Ericson and Jose, cooking up a storm in the Ohio Valley

This story is about Jose and was written by Ericson.

Rodrigo and I meet in school and we were really good friends, inseparable.

I studied with him all through primary (elementary) school and we grew up together like brothers. We looked after each other.

One day I went to his house to hang out for the whole day and mess around and have fun. We were playing together when we saw his mum faint. She had passed out on account of concerns that were troubling her. She shared these feelings with her son, but Rodrigo ignored his mother.

Rodrigo’s girlfriend came over later, inviting him to go with her to the beach. Of course he wanted to go and so he agreed to the plans.

We were both 10th grade high school students. One average Friday, Rodrigo told all of his classmates that he was going to the beach with his girlfriend and he explained that his mum didn’t want him to go because of the feelings she’d earlier. But he didn’t care and so the next day he went to the beach.

He was at the beach with his girlfriend and her family and her friends. They lit a bonfire in the evening and after they started to drink alcohol. He decided to go swimming in the surf, so he told his girlfriend to go with him and both of them went in. They were already out quite a way when he told his girlfriend that he was going to go in deeper.

When he had swum out to where the waves were breaking, a big wave overcame him and smashed him into some rocks. He didn’t come out.

Rodrigo’s girlfriend’s family had the difficult task of explaining to Rodrigo’s mother that he went into the water but never came out. Twenty four hours later, his body was found floating in the water, completely destroyed. His face was deformed, his body beaten and his eyes were no longer in his body. They took Rodrigo’s body to his mother.

The family held a funeral for his body and his mother told everyone, “He didn’t obey me.” His poor mother was brokenhearted along with the rest of his family.

This horrible tragedy occurred because Rodrigo didn’t obey the Bible, which tells us to honour our father and mother and our days on Earth will be long and prosperous.

POST by ELIEZER: Stivey's Sad Suicide Story

Stivey mucking around in the Ohio Valley

Hello my name is Eliezer and this time I am going to tell you a story about Stiven’s family

My friend Stiven is a funny, nice, and very good friend but like everyone, he has a lot of problems in his life.

Stivens aunt, named Luisa, is a very kind and humble lady. She had a son named Jonathan and he was 19 years old. He was Stiven’s best friend but he had a problem with drugs and alcohol. He would always be with people that were involved in gangs and he would not listen to his mum.

About four years ago, around Easter time, Luisa decided to take a trip to the beach with her family. They decided to rent a mini bus that would make the trips to the beach, together with others from the community who also wanted to go. She did not know that it would be one of the worst trips of her life. The day of the trip, everyone was really excited, but the day before Jonathan had had a fight with his mum. He was high on drugs and acting crazily.

The time to go to the beach had arrived and Jonathan was mad at his mum. He went to Stiven and told him what had happened with his mum and Stiven pleaded him to not be mad with her. He gave him an idea to ask for forgiveness but Jonathan didn’t want to so he did not  listen to him and he went to the back of the minibus and started to drink alcohol.

When they got to the beach, Jonathan got into a fight with his mum but this time he went too far and he hit her with a bottle of alcohol that he had in his hand. Her head started to bleed and she started to cry and so Jonathan ran away.

Jonathan’s mum asked Stiven to go and look for him with the help of other people and so they searched for him for two hours. When they finally found him, he was on the rocks where the waves were crashing down.

When Jonathan saw the search party, he jumped off the edge of the rocks calling out “Sorry mum” and he died. The waves cut his body in half. It was impossible to get him out. Even a police boat tried to get him out but failed.

Stiven was really upset because Jonathan was his best friend and he did not know how to tell Jonathan’s mum because it would be difficult for her to take.

Stivey’s experience shows us that addictions and bad company make us do stuff that we might regret. Thank you for reading my story.

POST by LIZ: The LOVE Shack!

Elizabeth with some of her boys

As I fumbled my way through my purse hunting for the $20 Radio Shack discount receipt, the cashier asked me typical questions we get when entering places with a mass of Nicaraguan lads in tow.

I explained why we were in the States and why we live in Nicaragua.

“Wow!” he gasped, after my spill, and at that moment he ceased just being the professional Radio Shack cashier across the counter from me, and revealed his humanitarian heart.  “I really want to do something like that too – I want to make a difference – wow, I bet that must make you feel really good…” and he continued to lavish praise and admiration for the work that we do.

His eyes were gentle and genuine, but the rest of his words were wasted on me.  I couldn’t get past his phrase ‘I bet that must make you feel really good…’ His words whirled around my head, I couldn’t shake them.

“Make me feel good!” if only he knew how it made me feel.  I wanted to tell him how it really made me feel.  The recent events flashed through my mind like a B rated horror movie from the sixties.
Situations flashing through my mind recalling all the rejecting statements, compulsive lies, and bad attitudes which had been thrown into our path, like ugly weeds growing in a rose bed.

Now to be fair, this particular day had been especially tough; I had started out the day dealing with tired teenagers wanting to get their own way - which of course clashed with my own agenda for them, and I was having a particularly tough season dealing with Yordy, who was slipping away into depression, Rene, who wanted to act like a porn star, and Beycker, who thought he was every girls’ dream come true.

I wanted to scream out and release the pent up feelings I had harboured and allow those who had taken out their own hurts and rejections on me, to see that I was just human too. I wanted to pour out my bottled-up hurt from constantly being rejected, unloved and unappreciated.

My captured feelings shocked me.  I didn’t realise that I held on to so much hurt.  Over the years, I had helped many people unlock their trapped hurts and had explained that hurt left untouched would morph into binding bitterness – yet here I was, standing on a polished floor with a beaming cashier believing in what we do, and seeing the mountain of bitterness I had allowed to build within.

Never-the-less, I snapped back into my reality, smiled at the kindhearted cashier man, and said, “Yep, it’s rewarding, but it sure is a rollercoaster ride at times,”

We left the shop with shouts of well-wishing from all the staff, including the district manager, who was visiting the store and had also taken interest in our life.  The lads were high spirited, and left the shop in normal style; double twists and flips. Everyone whooping and cheering and laughing and totally unaware of the mountain I carried inside.

Later that night I checked my heart before the Lord.  “God, I didn’t realise I was so hurt and I can feel bitterness consuming me.  I want to ‘feel good about what I do’, but right now I just feel that no matter how much I pour myself out, I receive a stack load of rejection, fear and failure thrown in my face.”
“You know what your problem is, Liz?” God shot back at me. “You are doing things out of your own love for people.  Even Jesus didn’t do this!  You think Jesus died for you because he loves you – but this is not true!”

“WHAT?” I thought… “that goes against EVERYTHING I was raised with. ”

“Well, read the scripture Liz, it doesn’t say, ‘for Jesus loved the world so much he gave his life,’ No! It says, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only son..’ you see Liz, Jesus died for you out of love and obedience for me! But YES, Jesus does love you – because of my love for you! And this is the way you need to operate too.  If you do things out of your own love for others then you will either only love those that are lovely, but Matthew says... where is the reward in that?! But if you love the unlovely out of your own love, then you will get burnt out, rejected, unloved, and unappreciated.

Because those who are rejected will reject, those who are unloved will be unlovely, and those who don’t feel appreciated will be ungrateful.   But, if you do it only out of love and obedience for me, then you won’t even look for praise or acceptance from others.  If you do things out of love for me, then it doesn’t matter what the reaction is from the person, because you will only look to me to say ‘Well done good and faithful servant!  Then you will truly be living for an audience of one!  The best part is that your love for others will actually increase – Jesus does love you and did die for you because he sees you through my eyes.  This is how I want you to approach your ‘work’ for me. ”

So, I can’t say that I am fully there yet, but I can say that when I receive the rejecting words and actions, especially the ones so typical from teenagers, they don’t stab my heart like before, because I’m now doing things out of love and obedience for God.
