POST by NESTOR (Nicavangelists' Youth & Worship Leader): Runaway Roberto

Nestor in San Antonio, Texas

Roberto, when he was just 8 years old, was a child like everyone; cheerful, naughty and clever. He met many friends at the school he attended, which was the poorest school in Nicaragua. His parents didn't have enough money to send him to a private school.

Roberto didn't know Jesus. “God” was just a part of his messy mind like the hero in a magazine. At home he was never loved, even though his grades were very good.

One day Roberto decided to leave home and never return. He was 19 years old when he started to explore the world by himself without any money in his pocket. Life sucked! Everything was going wrong for him. On that journey he wasn't lucky enough to find shelter, nor a steady job.

Being a homeless young man, he fell into the world of drugs, turning his life into a complete disaster. As time passed by, Roberto started to survive by robbing people in the street and bullying the kids around him.

One day Roberto bumped into an old friend of his who used to study with him at school. They talked for a while and the friend advised Roberto to change his life and live for Jesus only. Roberto smiled at him and said “Jesus doesn't exist, he’s just a man from history, from the bible, he’s not real.” Roberto then went on to blame God for everything he had been through in his life.

His friend asked Roberto to pray, and promised to leave him alone after praying, and so that’s what happened. The prayer touched Roberto’s heart and after a few minutes he began to cry. He realised that God had been with him all the time even during the worst times of his life when he was without a reason to live. He realised that God had protected him from evil that had surrounded him.

One month later Roberto was sharing his testimony at his friend’s church. He praised God for everything and promised, in front of the assembled people, to honour him for the rest if his life.

Now Roberto is one of the ushers at my church. He works very hard and has a new reason to live. Can you image how powerful the love of God is, that with just with one simple prayer God was able to change Roberto’s life? God loves us all, no matter who we are or what we have been through. He has a plan for you and sooner or later you will realise what God’s plan is for your life here on Earth.

POST by MYRON: Look How Far I've Come

Myron at Niagara Falls, with Canada in the background

Five years ago, everything at home was very different. My dad would drink a lot of alcohol, a lot! He used to drink almost every day. My father would only cause destruction in the life of my mother and my siblings.
We were forced to go and sleep at my grandmother’s house. My grandmother was very loving and kind to me, because I was the youngest out of my siblings.

The years passed by and I was growing. My dad was starting to stop drinking, and me and my brothers and my aunt would always go to church. We learnt a lot about the Bible. I was eleven years old and I grew close to God in my heart.

My older brother started to drink a lot of alcohol, and he became a gangster. My mother was working and so was my dad, and I was going to school like other kids in my community. On my birthday we went out to eat and to go and see some cool places. My mum was very proud of me, and my dad was too.

Months went by and I met the Brien family and their group. I now am a part of the Nicavangelists dance crew, and that’s why I’m here in America. I am proud to tell you my stories. This is all I have today, thanks for reading.

POST by ABEN: Father of the Fatherless

Aben at Pastor Michael's house in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania

I am the only boy out of six kids. My dad was with another woman and with her, he had three girls. Then he met my mum at a bakery. They entered into a relationship and as time passed, together they had a little girl, so my dad had four daughters in total.

He had accepted that his life would only be filled with daughters. My parents had been together for two years when my mum became pregnant again. She was pregnant with me and when my dad found out that I was a boy, he said “That boy is not mine!” My mum asked “Why not?” and he responded with, “It’s not mine because I only have girls.”

My dad had never wanted that little boy. He would say that the kid was a disgrace and my mum would suffer because my dad left her when I was born and so she did not really have any support.

I grew up without a father and so at times I would ask my mum about my dad. She would flippantly explain that my father left because of me being a boy, and that I should never have been born.

I was just a child without a dad and without the love of a mother because she would always be working to get food for her two kids. I never had a dad to guide me and to take away the bad memories and the painful words.

My dad came back looking for my mum and told her lies that he would never leave her and she was convinced that his words were truth. Once again, she became pregnant and it was a girl so now we were six in total and with only one boy out of the six kids.

Then he left again and when he was leaving he said, “That boy annoys me. I want to get away from him!” She was abandoned again and she had no money and no home (because my grandmother had told her to leave the house because she fell for what my dad had said).

My mum prayed to God that he would give her strength to keep moving forward. The place where we lived was horrible and cold. Our house was made out of plastic and cardboard. Then we went back to live with my grandmother.

My mum gave thanks to God because he had listened to her when she had asked Him for a better place to live. He had heard her prayers about being removed from that horrible place where we were living.

She started believing more in God and she said to me that there is a father that will never leave you. I asked “Who?” and she said “God in heaven. I am so sorry for everything that I have said to you. I now know that having a son is a blessing and you are a blessing to me. Even if your dad is not here, you will never go without food from now on. I will be your dad and your mum forever.”

Now I thank God because he does miracles and gave me a mum whose words are true. A dad is not someone who just makes a woman pregnant, but it is the man who takes care of them and I now know that I have a father who is God because he always takes care of me.

POST by SOPHIA: My Life

When I’m alone with Him, in my mind he takes me to a path in the woods that he’s leading me on.

Doing what we're doing, we come across a LOT of broken lives, and people desperate for answers. To date, I haven't been as moved by anyone's story, in the way that I've been moved by the life of Sophia. This young lass, is beautiful and talented, smart and driven, yet she has been used, abused, rejected, despised, and now works with everything she's got to get her life on track for the promise of glory.

I have met Sophia's parents, who are just human like the rest of us. They've done a magnificent job at raising their kids, with compassion and love, and yet, like other parents, they’re not supernatural beings and can only be in one place at one time. Unfortunately, their baby girl was deeply broken, and nothing that they could do would mend the heart of their daughter, which lay in tatters.

But, there is hope. Jesus Christ came for the lost. He came for the sinner. He came for the broken. He alone knows the pain and suffering of all humanity. He took it with him to the cross. And so I’d like to allow Sophia the opportunity of sharing with you her story. She’s a brave girl and I’m mightily proud of her:

Everyone goes through hard times in life, some worse than others. But it’s who you depend on and how you get through it that makes you who you are. I've been through a lot in my life, but instead of leaning on God, I just wanted people to pity me.

When I was ten, my best friend at the time told me every detail of how her dad had often sexually abused her and what he had done to her. I remember everything she told me, but because she told me when I was so young, I blocked out all memories of my childhood to protect myself. I don't have any memories of anything until about the age of 13, and even then I only have bad memories.

I am the 5th child of 8 in my family. I was homeschooled ‘til 9th grade and in 10th grade I started getting into drinking, drugs, boys and sex, and everything bad. I thought that the only way to be happy was to do all of these things.

Well, surprise, surprise, I was wrong. Guys and drugs only hurt me. I have had my heart broken in so many ways. Guys would tell me they love me and they don't want anyone else, and that I am so beautiful and special. Yet after they gotten what they’d wanted, they would tell me it was all a lie and that I am actually trash.

I tried to kill myself many times and I used to cut myself every day for many months. All I could think was I just wanted to get away from the hurt and the pain. Yet, I continued to run after guys and drugs.

Twice I thought I was pregnant and I would worry about what I’d tell my parents and what I’d do with a kid at 17. But lucky for me, I was not pregnant and God helped me through it.

Now, for the last four weeks or so I’ve been reading my Bible and talking to God. When I’m alone with Him, in my mind he takes me to a path in the woods that he’s leading me on.

I often feel really alone and sad. I cry myself to sleep because I wish I could remember my past... but then I remember that God is always there, even when no one else is.

A couple of weeks ago I met all of these wonderful, handsome, nice, crazy Nicaraguan boys who got me to think in a whole new way. They have been through hell and back and they still dance and sing for God with smiles on their faces. If they can be happy then I think I can too.

POST by ORLANDO: Fortune Shnookie

Orlando - Everything's Alright!

Hello! God bless everyone and I hope you are all well. Today I am going to explain about the purpose of flying to the United States.

Since I was a kid, I have always dreamt of visiting the United States. Between the ages of 12 and 14 years, I also dreamed of traveling. But because I didn’t have the money to travel, it was something that was very hard to do.

But time passed and when I turned 15 my dad gave me a guitar. With the help of God I learnt how to play the guitar by watching youtube videos and by allowing the gift that God has given me with music, to just flow out.

The worship team of my church have often spoken into my life, in a lot of different activities. I feel that God is saying that he has big plans for me and my family. Those plans involve me going to different countries, showing the talent that God has given me, and testifying that God does exist.

The reason I would like to travel to the USA is to show the people there what God has done in my life.

I thank God for giving me this opportunity, and for putting both helpful and special people in my life like Jed and Elizabeth.

With people that God has put on my life’s path, and through God’s strength, we will travel to the United States of America, displaying our Nicaraguan talent, and testifying to the faithfulness of God in our lives, and with his help, being famous for his love and glory.

God bless everyone.

POST by YORDY: The Purpose Driven Search

Raffy, Yordy & Jonny

My time in the States was very exciting. We met a lot of people with good hearts. They talked to us about their pasts and the changes that God has made in their lives.

We too, were able to share the truth about how our lives were before we got to know Jesus. We had very hard lives when we were lost on the streets. We only did bad things, and so I thank God for placing Jed and Elizabeth Brien in my life.

They are a very good family who follow the foot prints of our God. They showed us how to live with Jesus in our hearts. We too have been able to help others make changes in their lives. We’ve been able to help people who really needed it, in the United States.

I have a lot of faith in God, that he will give us another opportunity to share the gift that he has given us.

I hope to see God move in a lot of lives on this next trip (to Minnesota and Wisconsin) and also hope that the people we visit will learn more about the purpose that God has for their lives.

Thanks for reading and God bless you.

POST by JOSE: Dios te Cuida en Los Momentos Más Duros

Jose with his pal Ronny...

About two years ago I had an experience that involved feeling the presence of God by my side. He guided and protected me from a lot of dangers.

One day a friend of mine invited me to go with her to church, because they were having an evangelistic service. I decided to accept the invitation and went along with my friend.

We went along and I enjoyed the preaching and how they shared Jesus. I was very happy and started to go every Sunday to church.

One Sunday I went to church and everything started out great.  I liked feeling the joy of the Lord and the thrill of being together with other Church folk who also loved the Lord.

I felt very happy because before I knew Christ, I did not believe in him. Things would happen to me in my life, and I would be like “why are these things happening to me? Why do these bad things ALWAYS happen to me?” I would start crying and felt like I didn’t have answers to my questions.

Most of the time I felt like life wasn’t worth living and that there was no point in going on, and that life just didn’t make sense.

Living life like that, meant that there was no meaning for me. It made me push people away. I felt invisible. I did not want to talk to anyone. People would talk to me and I would answer them with unkind words.

I hated everyone and I didn’t care about anyone. I felt invincible. But when I went to that church, everything changed and I felt comforted.

One day, the service went on for a little longer than usual. After the service, some brothers from church offered me a lift in their car and dropped me at a bus stop. I waited a long time for the bus, my mode of transport for getting home, but it never came.

I was very scared because my house was a long way away from where I had been waiting for the bus. So I started to pray to Jesus. I asked him, “Lord, please protect me from danger and don’t let anything bad happen to me. Please take care of me.”

At that very moment, I started to walk to my house. I needed to go through places that were very dangerous, where bad things happen. I kept on walking and praying asking God to protect me.

I did not know the way, because the city is big and at times I felt lost. Yet God guided me with the wind. He directed me and told me which way to go. I went through places that might have been dangerous, but no one came out to hurt me.

The trip home on a bus takes about an hour, but God assisted me and my travel time was not too long - I arrived home in just an hour and a half! I was safe and unharmed, ALL thanks to God.

At that moment I knew that he was always with me protecting me. When you have problems that feel pretty hard, ask Jesus to help you, because he is always aware, no matter what. Never lose faith. Faith moves mountains!

Always trust the Lord, because he will help you with the hardest problems of your life.

POST by JOSE: Important Business

Jose flying away

Hello! God bless all of the nations of the earth, everyone in them, and every language group.

My name is Jose Bayardo and I'm from Nicaragua. I live in a very poor neighborhood where people don’t have much. My community is filled with crime and drugs,  but thank God I found a wonderful family who gave us a hand. Elizabeth and Jed Brien assisted us, and took us out of our dangerous world.

With their effort, we now have a group that is learning about who God is, and we have him in our lives. Our hearts are changing and this is obvious through the new people that we have become.  God has so much love for us, His Creation.

When I was a child, I wanted to travel to the United States of America. Now  I want to know new people and make new friends, brothers in Jesus Christ. I always prayed and  asked the Lord to travel to the United States of America. God has answered my prayers.

God is amazing, he has made my dreams come true. God has helped us come to America, to perform our street theatre production in Churches, so that people will know God.

Another one of my dreams is to help and support my mother. I really want my mother to meet a man who will be her husband, a man who will appreciate my mother, because she has suffered a lot in her life.

I want the best for my mother. God is wonderful and he wants the best for us, his children, his creation. He wants us, Capital on the Edge, to walk on the right path, the path that is just.  All of our group want to learn and we thank God in Heaven for Jed and Elizabeth, who have given us this wonderful opportunity to go and perform for the folks in the USA.

In poorer places, where there are many bad things, they have supported the people and we have performed our amazing street theatre production.  We help Jed and Elizabeth with the production.

Thank you for listening to the goals and the dreams of my heart. You play an important role in our work.

POST by JOSE: Let's go to the Beach, Beach...

Orlando & Jose of Capital on the Edge

Something important happened in my life about two years ago. We were organising a trip with some friends. We were just about finished packing for our journey when a 57 year old neighbour gave us a pound of rice and vegetables to take with us.

One of my friends made fun of the gift that the lady was offering, laughing at her, but my other friend told him off, and said that he shouldn’t be rude to her, because she is elderly and in any case, we might need the food for our journey.

And so we thanked the old lady for giving us the food, the rice and the vegetables. We then left on our journey. We went to the coast and the people we were staying with didn’t want to give us any food to eat. When we became hungry, we remembered that we had the food from the nice neighbour lady

And so we asked the people that we were staying with if we could using their cooking facilities to prepare our food, as we had no money spare. The only money we had, we needed for our transportation on the bus.

In the following days we were very hungry.  We had nothing to eat. We arose at 5am and went to the beach and gathered crabs and coconuts, and ate them raw.

We went to the beachside restaurants and danced for the foreign tourists. None of them gave us any money. The restaurants didn’t give us food either. However, one of my friend’s aunts kindly gave us food to eat: fish and salad. She also gave us a fizzy drink each. We were so grateful to her, because she gave to us when we were really hungry.

The next day we hitch hiked home. After a few months went by, we found out that the kind lady who had helped us with food in our time of great need, had passed away on account of a heart attack. This lady had been very overweight.

We were very sad, because my friend’s aunt has in Heaven with God. If it were not for her, in our hour of need, who knows what would have happened to us. Thank the Good Lord that he put her in our way at that exact moment. We really appreciated her kindness and we hope that she rests in peace with God.

Obesity is a terrible disease that affects most people and it takes away your life bit by bit. However, trust in God who is the only one who can truly help us. Thanks for reading my story.

POST by JONNY: The Comfort of Christ in Times of Crisis

Jonny of Capital on the Edge (Nicaragua)

Hello my name is Johnny. My story is based on a very poor family.

In 2008 a family lived in a house which they rented. They worked hard, collecting junk from the streets (mostly metal), which they then sold in order to pay their rent. They worked 7 days per week, all day, and never missed a rent payment.

The girls in this family were mostly aged between two and nine years of age. The girls in this family walked the streets, helping their grandmother collect junk to sell (they didn’t go to school) because their mother had left them to be with a man.

In 2010 this family was evicted from their house, by their landlord, and this made my mother very sad. My mother asked this family if they would like to sleep in our house for the night. They quickly agreed.

The next morning my father and mother discussed the problem for a long time. This situation was serious and troublesome. My parents came up with a solution, to have the family live with us permanently. My father, brother and I constructed a one-room dwelling for this family to live in.

With time the grandmother began to really trust my mother. One day she explained to my mother why they had been suddenly evicted.

The landlord had been raping her granddaughters and giving them money. The grandmother didn’t know about it at the time. Eventually the neighbours worked out what was happening and they told the grandmother, who became furious with this man. She confronted him about this tragedy and he became angry and sent them all out onto the street.

This family is now very happy, because they live in peace. Sometimes they do not have enough to eat, but they are free!

My Mum wants this family to be a part of our family, because that is the heart of God and it is what he would want for them.

God bless you, Amen.
