POST by MYRON: Look How Far I've Come

Myron at Niagara Falls, with Canada in the background

Five years ago, everything at home was very different. My dad would drink a lot of alcohol, a lot! He used to drink almost every day. My father would only cause destruction in the life of my mother and my siblings.
We were forced to go and sleep at my grandmother’s house. My grandmother was very loving and kind to me, because I was the youngest out of my siblings.

The years passed by and I was growing. My dad was starting to stop drinking, and me and my brothers and my aunt would always go to church. We learnt a lot about the Bible. I was eleven years old and I grew close to God in my heart.

My older brother started to drink a lot of alcohol, and he became a gangster. My mother was working and so was my dad, and I was going to school like other kids in my community. On my birthday we went out to eat and to go and see some cool places. My mum was very proud of me, and my dad was too.

Months went by and I met the Brien family and their group. I now am a part of the Nicavangelists dance crew, and that’s why I’m here in America. I am proud to tell you my stories. This is all I have today, thanks for reading.

POST by ORLANDO: Growing Up Nica!

Orlando Huembes

Hello my name is Orlando Huembes and I am from Managua, Nicaragua. I want to tell you a bit about my life.

I used to live in a workshop for smashed up cars. In this workshop they’d straighten out the cars’ bodies, painting them and repairing their engines. I used to live with my father, my mother and my brother.

In this workshop there were many incidents where I suffered an accident on my fingers and knees, due to the carelessness of the car mechanics. However, I was a child and I didn’t know what I should and shouldn’t be grabbing.

Ond day, when I was just 7 years old, a large metal bus part fell from many meters above onto my head. I was immediately hospitalised for the injury I’d suffered on my head. I had to stay in hospital for fifteen days.

Through all of our trials my father, from the sweat of his brow, continued to work and make our lives better.  Regardless, it was not sufficient. My father wasn’t able to provide enough of an income for our family and because of this he was rarely able to spend time with us.

And so I saw the need to work and help my family, irrespective of the job requirements. I decided to sell water at the traffic lights and beg for money. My Mum thought I was at school, but mostly I wasn’t. I needed to study but I left school to go and get money because sometimes my dad spent his earnings on liquor.

It was a very difficult time for my mother, as we didn’t have food to eat, and providing meals is the first priority for a mum.

My friends told me to come with them to where the busses stop. There people would give us money if we begged. And so we went, praying that God would help us. If we went and begged for money, God would help us. I will always remember this moment in my life.

I want to learn and to do things better each day with God's help. We all have a purpose in this life and at times we need to sacrifice for each other.

Thanks, it was a pleasure being able to share this moment with you. Thanks for taking the time to read about my experiences. Regards, from Capital on the edge, on the Old Road to Leon,  in Nicaragua.

POST by JONNY: The Cost of a Kid's Life

Jonny (Center) with his friends, before leaving for Guatemala

Hello my name is JONNY

My story is about a friend who was killed in a very bad way.

My friend's name was Jonny and he was a break dancer like me. One day Jonny told me “hey boy, I’m going to work in Guatemala and there I’ll also be able to dance with some of my new friends.

I said “be careful. Guatemala is a very dangerous country.” He said quietly to me “it’s okay. I have friends in Guatemala who will look after me.” I responded with “okay, very good. Keep safe…” and with that he left.

The year after that I went to a competition in Guatemala and I saw my old friend Jonny. He had a lot of money and so I asked him “What work are you to be earning so much money?” Jonny hushed me and asked that I go with him to a place where nobody could hear us talk. When we arrived in a secluded area he told me “I am hitman.”

“A hitman? What’s that?” I was confused. He replied “I get paid to kill people.”  I asked Jonny “Why do you do this awful job?” He responded “This is my life here. I never had a father like you. Do not ask me more questions, ok?”

In that moment I decided to return to the dancing competition. Jonny left. He turned around and walked out, not even looking back.

After the competition, I returned to Nicaragua. Three months later, I was practicing my dancing at our usual spot. A friend of mine came to where I was practicing with my group and told our troupe that Jonny had been killed in Guatemala.

I was upset, “Who killed him?” I asked. My friend explained that MARA had killed Jonny. “Mara” is an organisation, a gang, and they kill for money. My entire dance group felt very bad about Jonny’s murder.

The next day, the body of Jonny was transported from Guatemala to Nicaragua and placed in a morgue.

Jonny’s family went together to the morgue, as they wanted to retrieve the body. The staff explained to Jonny’s family that it would not be possible to even look at the body, let alone take it away. The body was in a terrible state and must be buried in the ground immediately.

The family of Jonny, said “it’s okay to bury him now. But his mother would like to see her son, just one last time.” The doctor responded with “no, it’s just not possible.” The mother insisted, “I want to see my son!” The doctors finally gave in and permitted just the mother to take one last moment with her son.

When finally the mother was with her son she became distraught. Her son had been cut into pieces. His head, legs and arms had all been severed from his body. The doctors were also very upset, as they had really tried to not allow this lady to see her mutilated son’s body.

Without knowing what had happened, I asked my mum what had happened to the body of my friend. She explained that the hands, feet and head of Jonny had been cut off. I then felt really bad about what had happened.

Later, the mother of my friend said to me “He wanted to go to Guatemala, but I said no. It’s a very dangerous country. He didn’t listen to me. Later I learnt that he was killing people for a living. For this reason he was murdered.”

Because he wanted to earn a bit of money, my friend’s life has been destroyed forever.

God bless the people who read this story.

POST by JONNY: Finding Happiness in Homelessness

Jonny, before his time with Capital on the Edge

This story comes from my childhood.

When I was 8 years old my family lived in BILLA LIVERTA. At that time my brothers experienced a problem with some guys who came to a home which my family was visiting. About 40 guys began to throw rocks at the house and my dad was standing in the door and was not hurt too badly by the rock throwiang. The family we were visiting became very nervous about what was going on, because the bad blokes wanted to destroy their house!

But my dad had a gun and threatened all of the men with it who were damaging the house. The men, when they saw the gun, ran away. One of the rock-throwing-men hit the dog with a machete on it’s neck. The dog was dying and my dad was very angry and so he went to the police to submit a complaint, but the police did not want to go where the problem was.

My dad was very upset about what was happening and my Mum agreed that we had to leave this place (because of the violence in the neighbourhood). And so we left that place permanently and we lost our house and everything inside. But now we are well, thank God. But now we do not own a home. However, JESUS CHRIST is great and will help us and give us blessings to keep on going. Jesus is my shepherd and I don’t lack anything with Him.

POST by ELIEZER: Testimony

Eliezer in Sunny San Diego
Hello, my nam is Eliezer. I am going to share with you a little bit about my life.

I grew up in a very small region called Cedro Galan in Managua, Nicaragua. As a child, I had many needs, because we are very poor and things were not so good for my family.

When I was about 8 years old I went to work on a small coffee farm. I woke up at 2 am to be able to get there early enough to make money for my grandparents.

My parents left me with my grandparents for half of my life. I couldn’t be with my parents because they didn’t have a good house to live in. My Dad never wanted my family to tell other people, when I was born, that I was his son. I was denied and told that I was not his son. I never experienced true love from a father.

But with luck, my sisters could have that love from my father, the love I always wanted. I have two sisters. The one that is 11 years old is the one that I love the most.

The other one is my age, she is my half sister, she is very selfish and my dad always gives everything to her, but he gives my little sister very little. He never gives me anything. I feel a little better because my sister hopefully won’t have to go through what I went through.

My dad was very bad to my mum, he always mistreated her when they were not together and told my sister and I horrible words about my mama. I always have those bad memories when he would say "your mum is a bitch, I am going to kill her and cut her head off." I felt very bad and my sister did not deserve to hear those words from my dad. Because of the horrible words, I can never forgive him.

Due to the conditions we lived in, it was hard for me to go to school. I had little time for my studies. I started to study very early, but my job made it difficult for me to study. It’s very sad that these things can change a person’s life.

My house was made very poorly. It was made of sheet metal on the sides as walls, and the house was very bad. The wood roof had so many holes that my bed would be wet when it rained. I would sleep in wet my wet bed, and my grandmother always cried because I was so sick. I was always cold.

I always had a childhood with hurt feelings and a broken heart.

I never had a birthday party or Christmas celebrations. But I have hope in God, and since I am with God, my heart feels better and I believe things will go well.

I hope you enjoyed my story, thank you for reading. God bless you today.

POST by ANNA: Polident and Hoverounds

One lovely Minnesota day, I was driving down the highway as my dad dozed off in the passenger seat. I only had my driver’s permit at the time, but my dad seemed to have confidence in my driving skills.

We passed a large hardware store where a truck carrying four large, metal patio chairs pulled out in front of me. All was well; I maintained a safe three-second following distance behind the truck. Actually, it was much more than three seconds because I was paranoid that one of the chairs would fall out the back of the truck.

It appeared that the chairs were not strapped in, and in one of those “what if something terrible happened” moments, I thought “How funny, yet traumatizing would it be if the chairs all flew out of the truck bed?”

I continued to drive like a grandmother, daydreaming about poli-grip and hoverounds until I looked up from my speedometer and saw a large patio chair fluttering around between the air and the road. In that moment, I like to think that I became a superhero.

My senses were heightened. I could hear my dad breathing next to me. I could feel the hair on my arms blow in the air conditioning. I could smell the coffee my dad had left in the car from that morning. I could taste pure strength in my mouth, or was that my gum?

More importantly, I could see the chair in the road and feel the steering wheel in my hands. Thankfully, my exit was right where the chair had fallen out. I tapped the breaks with my pinky toe, slightly turned the steering wheel to avert hitting the chair, and pulled to the side of the road.

In the process, I really do believe that I hit the chair because I heard a loud noise and felt as if I either ran over the chair or hit the front corner of the bumper. At this point, my dad decided to wake up because I was nervously repeating his name. “Dad….Dad….DAD….” He got out of the car, as we were now on the side of the road, to look at the damage.

To our surprise, there was absolutely no damage to the car. I was elated because I always wondered what I would do when adrenaline really kicked in. What would I do if I had to save my own life, or the life of a lowly patio chair, or even the life of a beat up Chevy Suburban? I now knew. I taunted my dad telling him I had saved his life and mine, as well as the life of the car.

As you now know, I was a dramatic young gal. Today, I use this story as an example of how, often times, I am quite unlucky. Although it may seem like I am moderately lucky since there was no damage to the car, the fact of the story is A PATIO CHAIR FELL OUT ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME WHILE I HAD ONLY MY DRIVER’S PERMIT AND MY DAD WAS SLEEPING. (Maybe I am still dramatic)

Another example of my lack of luck, misfortune if you’d like to call it that, was a day at summer camp a fairly recent time ago. That day I managed to pee my pants, trip and fall during a game of ultimate Frisbee, while the rest of the players came to a halt and laughed at me,  drooling all the while in front of the boy I liked.

Now, in Nicaragua, you would think my misfortune wouldn’t be able to reach me here, right? No. The Briens, who are pretty much the loveliest people I have ever met, have a serious case of the lack-of-luck. Say that ten times fast.

The sink will leak and then get fixed. Only though, if minutes before, the car tire pops, or the well runs out of water, or the horses run rampant through the neighborhood. Someone throws a rock in the pool. The showerhead pops off because of too much pressure.

The light bulb I take to move to the bathroom with no lights breaks in transition. I try to pick it up and burn my hand. I venture off to find a dustpan to sweep it into and there is not a one in sight.

My goodness, I love it here. That probably sounds sarcastic, but I have grown to embrace the lack-of-luck in my life. Of course, it can be frustrating at times, yet it  provides a good laugh everyday. The Brien family is truly delightful almost always laughing about the strange everyday mishaps that strike all of us.
